Best Stock Mopeds

Postby insomnia on Thu Jun 10, 2010 9:22 pm

Hey all,

I'm new here. I found this site while browsing mopeds for sale on craigslist. I've got a question if anyone would be kind enough to answer.

What is a good stock moped speed wise? I know enough about two stroke engines to fix one up and getting it running but, not nearly enough to bore it out (successfully anyway). I'm looking for something that can do 35-40ish without major engine modification. Does such a ped exist? If so, what brand(s) would you recommend? I don't own a moped yet but I'm looking for one to mess around with. Preferably something older, in the mid 70's to early 80's range.

I've searched for a basic list of stock moped speeds but as of yet have not found one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tomos. They're newer but you can find a used one for cheapish and they do like 30-35 stock. Put a bi-turbo on it and it goes 40. On a moped, you rarely ever wanna bore it out because it would cost the same if you bought a big bore kit, plus the kit is gonna work and your bored engine won't. It's just easier.

Thanks, Prancer.

Is that the only brand capable of over 30 stock? All of the Tomos peds I've seen are over $350. I'm on a $200 max budget to get my first ped. It doesn't have to be super fast just something that can keep up with traffic on 35mph roads if possible.

Does the kit you're speaking of include all prefab parts specific to your engine type? I checked out the bi-turbo exhaust too, kind of pricey. At least where I found it. Is there a store locally in the Cleveland area that sells these types of parts or do you know of some web sites that have these parts? If it's a site, give me a few links if you wouldn't mind. Again, I appreciate the help.

All of those are legit and are well known for good business and good parts. There's a TON of stuff out there. If you buy a kit for your bike, chances are it'll have what you need, but you'll probably have to buy a bigger carburetor and a performance exhaust as well. A kit (usually) consists of a big bore cylinder (usually 70cc or bigger and made of aluminum), piston, rings, gaskets, wrist pin, needle bearings, circlips. That's about what you need to install the kit itself.
Even if you were to bore out your stock cylinder (which is a waste of time, really), you're still gonna need a performance exhaust and a bigger carburetor. At the very least, you'll need to up-jet and de-restrict your airflow. Let me know if any of this is confusing.
I've got a 2-speed Garelli that can do an easy 30 bone stock, and I pushed it to 35 a few times and now the rings are shot. I've also got a single speed Carabela which is a knock-off of the Minarelli V1 engine and it can get up to about 30 as well. Keep in mind, they're just mopeds. Built to go forever, not to go fast. If you get a bike and put a pipe on it and jet it right, it'll run well for a long time. My Tomos has an easy 20,000 mi. on it. It's been my daily driver for several years. Stock parts aside from the exhaust and it does 40... or it did before it got old.

That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Those links should be enough to get me started.
I think I get the idea. Just to clarify though.. here's what I got. Engine modification for speed is not as reliable long term where as carb/exhaust tweaks with no engine modification don't give give as much of a boost to speed but are more reliable? A boost in speed would be cool but above all reliability is what I'm looking for. I don't really want to put all the time and effort into this just to fry the engine a month later. After all, I'm going to be driving it close to daily or whenever it's feasible to save on gas and get laughed at while doing it, not drag race it. :D

Chris
Thanks man.
Yeah for my budget it looks like I'm going to have a hard time finding anything that's running. I saw a fixer upper on CL the other day out in Wooster for $100. Literally 3 hours later I called the dude and it was already sold. The more I learn about it I'm thinking of just spending more up front ($400 or so) and save myself a lot of hassle and hunting. I'm a noob... how do you know it's an a35 engine? Is it stamped in the block or something?

The A35 came on several models. The model name is usually on the side of the bike. Targa, Sprint, Targa LX (aka- the TTLX), Arrow (for a few years, I think), Streetmate (again, I think it was only like two years before the A55).
If it's got a small sort of rounded cylinder, it's an A3. The A35 has a bigger, more blocky looking cylinder. Also, the A3 has a choke thing on the throttle assembly whereas the A35 has a choke lever on the carb and the carb is side-mounted on the right side as opposed to the A3 which had a center mounted carb under the frame. Enelan and I are going to have a few cheap bikes in the $200 for sale soon. Hopefully Tomos if we can get them. If I get a hold of something soon, I'll make sure to give the Ohpeds a shout first.

If you come across a few bikes yeah definitely make a thread about it. My g/f wants one too so I'm looking for a second once I get mine.

Saw this on CL: http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/mcy/1788560498.html

I'd think about getting it, if I didn't want a puch.

Well, I was looking in the $400 dollar range. I just couldn't pass this one up. 427 miles, it runs and it was $125. All the lights work and everything it just has a flat tire in the back. I had to drive to Columbus to get it but I think it was worth it. It says 1980 on the vin sticker. I have no clue what model it is. I'll have to compare some pics or something.

Oh and I learned 16" in normal bike innertubes does NOT equal 16" in moped innertubes. Gotta love it when that voice in the back of your head says 'dude, give it up' yet you choose to trudge forward for 45mins knowing full well it won't work, which it didn't.

Where do you get innertubes for peds locally? Motorcycle shop? I don't really want to wait for it to be mailed if I don't have to.
